This Chocolate Banana Mug Cake is a quick and healthy way to curb your chocolate craving. Bonus: it only takes minutes to make!
chocolate banana mug cake
What’s the best flavor combination in the world? Obviously something with chocolate, but what else? Chocolate+peanut butter, chocolate+coconut; those are two of my favorite for sure, but another favorite is probably chocolate+banana. I remember when I was younger I used to go to the annual fair back in Ohio and get a chocolate covered banana every year because they were too good to pass up. So, why not create a simple mug cake with that flavor combination?

I’ve made a few different mug cake recipes and I always love them. Mug cakes are the perfect single serve dessert and perfect for when I’m craving sweets but don’t want to overdo it. With that being said, I am NOT a baker. Baking scares me. I’m afraid to add too much flour/salt/baking soda/baking powder etc., so I was thrilled that this recipe turned out on the SECOND try. Woohoo!

BANANA MUG CAKE INGREDIENTS

  • banana
  • whole wheat flour
  • cocoa
  • sugar
  • milk
  • chocolate chips
This microwave banana mug cake will take you no longer than three minutes to make, and afterward the only thing you will have to wash is a mug and maybe a few measuring spoons. Nothing is better than a quick clean-up. NOTHING. Ok you’re right–it’s second best after a delicious homemade chocolate banana mug cake.

HOW TO MAKE A MUG CAKE

Chocolate Banana Mug Cake

In order to make a mug cake, you’re going to need a microwave-safe mug. It sounds like a no-brainer, but not all mugs are, so make sure yours is before you make this recipe. Once you have that, you’re going to mash the ripe banana in the bottom of the mug, then mix all of the dry ingredients MINUS the chocolate chips together with the banana. Next, stir in the milk so that all the ingredients are combined. As a result, you should have something that resembles cake batter.
Now, you’re going to microwave the cake for approximately 45 seconds or until the cake is set. This banana mug cake recipe is egg-free, so it’s ok if it’s slightly under-baked. Last, sprinkle some chocolate chips on top for that extra goodness.

This whole cake might take up a whole 9 minutes of your time: 3 minutes to prepare, 3 minutes to eat and a 3 minute clean up. Plus, it’s healthy and delicious—what could be better?

Awesome! The perfect way to use up old bananas when you don’t have the time or energy to make banana bread (the older the banana the better in terms of sweetness). Many brownie mug cakes I made have been rubbery, but this one was deliciously gooey. Sprinkled the top with walnuts and some butterscotch chipits as well as dark chocolate chipits for a totally decadent but also somewhat healthy dessert. Absolutely loved it!

This is one of the best mug cake recipes I tried, it’s super moist and chocolatey. I just want to eat it everyday day now. 😅

45 seconds is not long enough. I followed it each step and even bought whole wear flour to make his and it ended up and a pudding mess but it tasted meh so it gets 2 stars

This is a very old recipe and I agree — 45 seconds isn’t long enough! Mine took 1 minute 15 seconds, so you’ll need to adjust the time based on your microwave.

Followed the recipe exact (until the baking time, of which it needed 4x as much to not show raw mixture on top) and still ended up with more of a gooey banana chocolate pudding. Not sure where I went wrong and the texture definitely isn’t for me

I doubled the recipe, added a small scoop of plant based protein powder, and instead of microwaving i baked it in the toaster oven in a ramekin. Not quite the texture i was wanting – I was really going for a little more of a cakey texture, and it came out quite fudgy. But, it’s still tasty and I would make it again as a way to have a healthy sweet treat for breakfast! Might keep experimenting on how to make this a little more cake-like.

This is my very first mug cake. Found a microwave oven on the street last night, and thus began a chain reaction. Can’t say I’m disappointed. I’ve got a book from Library Genesis on mug cakes, and will likely try most of them in the coming month. It’s called “20 vegan mug cakes.” This chocolate banana one I made using soy milk, otherwise, I stuck to the recipe, except for a dash of vanilla extract, which I would feel weird not adding. Nuked for 60 seconds, and still could use a bit more radiation. Delicious regardless. Kudos!

This is good, but a totally different texture than I was expecting, more like a chocolate banana pudding cake. I don’t dislike. Just…confused. lol totally going to eat the whole thing. â˜ș
