This Chocolate Banana Mug Cake is a quick and healthy way to curb your chocolate craving. Bonus: it only takes minutes to make!

What’s the best flavor combination in the world? Obviously something with chocolate, but what else? Chocolate+peanut butter, chocolate+coconut; those are two of my favorite for sure, but another favorite is probably chocolate+banana. I remember when I was younger I used to go to the annual fair back in Ohio and get a chocolate covered banana every year because they were too good to pass up. So, why not create a simple mug cake with that flavor combination?Â
Â
I’ve made a few different mug cake recipes and I always love them. Mug cakes are the perfect single serve dessert and perfect for when I’m craving sweets but don’t want to overdo it. With that being said, I am NOT a baker. Baking scares me. I’m afraid to add too much flour/salt/baking soda/baking powder etc., so I was thrilled that this recipe turned out on the SECOND try. Woohoo!Â
BANANA MUG CAKE INGREDIENTS
- banana
- whole wheat flour
- cocoa
- sugar
- milk
- chocolate chipsÂ
This microwave banana mug cake will take you no longer than three minutes to make, and afterward the only thing you will have to wash is a mug and maybe a few measuring spoons. Nothing is better than a quick clean-up. NOTHING. Ok you’re right–it’s second best after a delicious homemade chocolate banana mug cake.
HOW TO MAKE A MUG CAKE

In order to make a mug cake, you’re going to need a microwave-safe mug. It sounds like a no-brainer, but not all mugs are, so make sure yours is before you make this recipe. Once you have that, you’re going to mash the ripe banana in the bottom of the mug, then mix all of the dry ingredients MINUS the chocolate chips together with the banana. Next, stir in the milk so that all the ingredients are combined. As a result, you should have something that resembles cake batter.Â
Now, you’re going to microwave the cake for approximately 45 seconds or until the cake is set. This banana mug cake recipe is egg-free, so it’s ok if it’s slightly under-baked. Last, sprinkle some chocolate chips on top for that extra goodness.

This whole cake might take up a whole 9 minutes of your time: 3 minutes to prepare, 3 minutes to eat and a 3 minute clean up. Plus, it’s healthy and deliciousâwhat could be better?

Q: Fill in the blank: chocolate+_________=best flavor combination. Have you ever made a mug cake? If not, you MUST–they are so simple.

This was so yummy & easy! I had to use gluten free flour because regular flour was sold out at this mad panic buying time, which is better for my belly anyway. Mixed in some coconut flour as well, honey instead of sugar & put in some fresh some fresh raspberries. Wow! This could turn in to a daily thing. So many browning bananas to use & no need for eggs đđđGenius! Thank you!
Yummy, doubled and made for two. Thanks for the great recipe!
I don’t usually leave comments on recipes I find online but WOW! I’ve tried dozens of microwave brownies and they’re always disappointing but this was incredible! Cooked mine for a minute and for many people I think that would be perfect but I do prefer mine a bit more gooey so will only do 45 seconds next time. đ
Thanks so much for the comment — I’m glad you liked the mug cake!
I tried this today, and after reading comments decided I would sub 1 Tbs. agave (that I needed to use) for the sugar. The added moisture made it rise well and have more of a fudge cake texture. Excellent! You might get same result by just adding 1 more Tbs. liquid. Thanks!
I’m doing this tomorrow afternoon or in the morning for breakfast đ Mmmm afternoon dessert đ

Chocolate and banana are seriously a match made in heaven. Certainly worthy of a mug cake recipe being created around. And now I am officially craving a chocolate covered banana!
Chocolate plus mint hell yes! I adore mug cakes!! They’re my favorite little dessert. I always like to put a little protein powder in them too, and then whisk protein powder with water to make an icing đ
