This Chocolate Banana Mug Cake is a quick and healthy way to curb your chocolate craving. Bonus: it only takes minutes to make!
chocolate banana mug cake
What's the best flavor combination in the world? Obviously something with chocolate, but what else? Chocolate+peanut butter, chocolate+coconut; those are two of my favorite for sure, but another favorite is probably chocolate+banana. I remember when I was younger I used to go to the annual fair back in Ohio and get a chocolate covered banana every year because they were too good to pass up. So, why not create a simple mug cake with that flavor combination?

I've made a few different mug cake recipes and I always love them. Mug cakes are the perfect single serve dessert and perfect for when I'm craving sweets but don't want to overdo it. With that being said, I am NOT a baker. Baking scares me. I'm afraid to add too much flour/salt/baking soda/baking powder etc., so I was thrilled that this recipe turned out on the SECOND try. Woohoo!

BANANA MUG CAKE INGREDIENTS

  • banana
  • whole wheat flour
  • cocoa
  • sugar
  • milk
  • chocolate chips
This microwave banana mug cake will take you no longer than three minutes to make, and afterward the only thing you will have to wash is a mug and maybe a few measuring spoons. Nothing is better than a quick clean-up. NOTHING. Ok you're right--it's second best after a delicious homemade chocolate banana mug cake.

HOW TO MAKE A MUG CAKE

Chocolate Banana Mug Cake

In order to make a mug cake, you're going to need a microwave-safe mug. It sounds like a no-brainer, but not all mugs are, so make sure yours is before you make this recipe. Once you have that, you're going to mash the ripe banana in the bottom of the mug, then mix all of the dry ingredients MINUS the chocolate chips together with the banana. Next, stir in the milk so that all the ingredients are combined. As a result, you should have something that resembles cake batter.
Now, you're going to microwave the cake for approximately 45 seconds or until the cake is set. This banana mug cake recipe is egg-free, so it's ok if it's slightly under-baked. Last, sprinkle some chocolate chips on top for that extra goodness.
Chocolate Banana Mug Cake
This whole cake might take up a whole 9 minutes of your time: 3 minutes to prepare, 3 minutes to eat and a 3 minute clean up. Plus, it's healthy and delicious—what could be better?

I doubled the recipe, added a small scoop of plant based protein powder, and instead of microwaving i baked it in the toaster oven in a ramekin. Not quite the texture i was wanting - I was really going for a little more of a cakey texture, and it came out quite fudgy. But, it's still tasty and I would make it again as a way to have a healthy sweet treat for breakfast! Might keep experimenting on how to make this a little more cake-like.

This is my very first mug cake. Found a microwave oven on the street last night, and thus began a chain reaction. Can't say I'm disappointed. I've got a book from Library Genesis on mug cakes, and will likely try most of them in the coming month. It's called "20 vegan mug cakes." This chocolate banana one I made using soy milk, otherwise, I stuck to the recipe, except for a dash of vanilla extract, which I would feel weird not adding. Nuked for 60 seconds, and still could use a bit more radiation. Delicious regardless. Kudos!

This is good, but a totally different texture than I was expecting, more like a chocolate banana pudding cake. I don't dislike. Just...confused. lol totally going to eat the whole thing. ☺️

This was so yummy & easy! I had to use gluten free flour because regular flour was sold out at this mad panic buying time, which is better for my belly anyway. Mixed in some coconut flour as well, honey instead of sugar & put in some fresh some fresh raspberries. Wow! This could turn in to a daily thing. So many browning bananas to use & no need for eggs 🙏😀💃Genius! Thank you!

I don't usually leave comments on recipes I find online but WOW! I've tried dozens of microwave brownies and they're always disappointing but this was incredible! Cooked mine for a minute and for many people I think that would be perfect but I do prefer mine a bit more gooey so will only do 45 seconds next time. 😊

I tried this today, and after reading comments decided I would sub 1 Tbs. agave (that I needed to use) for the sugar. The added moisture made it rise well and have more of a fudge cake texture. Excellent! You might get same result by just adding 1 more Tbs. liquid. Thanks!

Chocolate and banana are seriously a match made in heaven. Certainly worthy of a mug cake recipe being created around. And now I am officially craving a chocolate covered banana!

Chocolate plus mint hell yes! I adore mug cakes!! They're my favorite little dessert. I always like to put a little protein powder in them too, and then whisk protein powder with water to make an icing 🙂
