Raspberry Orange Smoothie

This layered Raspberry Orange Smoothie is a healthy and delicious way to start the day! The entire smoothie requires just 5 ingredients, is packed with Vitamin C and an easy way to add fruit into your diet.

What you’ll need:

  • Oranges – navel oranges, and make sure you peel them before adding them to the blender
  • Raspberries – need to use frozen raspberries if you want to layer your smoothie
  • Yogurt – vanilla or plain (I used Greek yogurt)
  • Milk – ANY milk will work, though I tend to prefer almond or oat
  • “Extras” – can use chia seeds or hemp seeds to add protein to this smoothie

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Make the raspberry layer. Add the raspberries and milk to a blender and pulse for 30-60 seconds. You want this layer to be THICK, so you may have to blend it for a little longer, but try not to add any extra liquid. If it really isn’t blending, add 1-2 tbsp more milk. Then, pour the smoothie into 2 glasses and place the glasses in the freezer.

Step 2: Make the orange layer. Add the oranges, yogurt, ice, and chia/hemp seeds to a blender and pulse for 1 minute. Then, pour the orange layer over the raspberry layer and drink up!

FAQs and Tips

The bottom layer (in this case, the raspberry layer) has to be thick or else when you add the second layer, they will mix into one another. So, you want to do two things:

  • Use frozen raspberries, which will automatically make the smoothie much thicker than it would be with fresh raspberries
  • Freeze the smoothie for 30 minutes, which will help to hold the layer in place. Don’t worry, it won’t actually be frozen — you can definitely still drink it!

Do I have to layer the smoothie?

Nope! Layering the smoothie is fun, but it’s definitely not necessary. If you’re not feeling the layers, simply add all the ingredients to your blender at once and blend for 1 minute, then pour the pink-colored smoothie into a glass.

Ingredients 

raspberry layer:

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 3/4 cup milk

orange layer:

  • 2 oranges, peeled
  • 1/3 cup yogurt, vanilla or plain
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 8 ice cubes

Instructions 

  • For the raspberry layer: add raspberries and milk to a blender and blend until smooth. You want the mixture to be THICK. Then, pour it into 2 glasses and place them in the freezer for 20 minutes.
  • For the orange layer: add ingredients to a blender and pulse until smooth. This layer should be thick, but not as thick as the raspberry layer. Pour it on top of the raspberry layer.
  • Alternatively, you don't have to layer the smoothie. Instead, add all ingredients to a blender at once and blend for 1 minute.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Tips for layering: If you want to layer your smoothie, make sure the bottom layer is super thick! You can do this by using frozen raspberries, and by placing the glass in the freezer for 30 minutes before adding the second layer, which will help to hold the first layer in place. 
You don't have to layer the smoothie! It's totally optional.

    This is so beautiful and I happen to have some raspberries in the fridge! Even though summer is fantastic, I’m always a Fall fan. Between the pumpkin and the cinnamon all my favorite flavors come into season , not to mention my Birthday is in October too!!

    I have to say I have been LOVING this weather in Pittsburgh! However, I don’t love it because I really want to use our boat a bit more 🙁 So that’s really the reason I love summer. Other than that, I love the 60s and 70s temps. perfect for me!

    I have been adding Orange powerade zero (need the electrolytes..) to my smoothies for years! I love it and am so glad someone else got on the orange drink bandwagon 😉

    I’m am getting SO freaking excited about the fact that fall is on its way! Don’t get me wrong — I like summer well enough — but it’s gotten to the point where I’m tired of the heat and excitement, and I just want something cooler and calmer. I love fall, but I don’t really want summer to be over. Actually, I want it to be between 75 and 65 degrees at all time. So yes, I should move to northern California.

I am sad summer is coming to an end, but I think I will have a little bit more time in Kentucky, so I am okay at the moment, as I will not be in Michigan. I was thinking the same thing about making the most of summer foods though, i have frozen so many already!
