If you’re a fan of peanut butter, you’ll love this Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie. It’s made with healthy ingredients like banana, peanut butter and oats, but it tastes like dessert in a glass and is a wholesome grab-and-go breakfast.

Recipe originally created: June 2014 // Updated: March 2020

This is one of the first recipes I ever created for the blog, so I figured it deserved some new photos! Nothing too fancy, because this recipe is fairly basic, but definitely worth re-sharing.

I’m a huge smoothie fan–always have been–and I’m constantly looking for ways to switch it up. Despite the fact that this peanut butter protein smoothie is made with healthy ingredients, it basically tastes like dessert in a glass. If you’re a fan of chocolate-peanut butter, peanut butter-banana, and/or chocolate-banana, this smoothie for you!

PEANUT BUTTER PROTEIN SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS

Bananas: Bananas are the base of this recipe, and because of that, I’m not going to recommend any substitutions. You’re more than welcome to try another kind of fruit, but this smoothie is supposed to tase like chocolate-peanut butter-banana. Plus, bananas add a creaminess to the texture that I just adore.

Peanut butter: Chocolate-peanut butter might be the ultimate flavor combination. The peanut butter makes this smoothie taste like a Reese cup, but any kind of nut butter will work (think: almond, cashew, or even tahini).

Cocoa: You can’t have a chocolate smoothie without cocoa powder! No substitutions here 🙂

Protein powder: I’m admittedly NOT a protein powder expert, meaning I don’t necessarily have any favorite brands. I currently have a vanilla soy protein powder which is what I used when photographing this recipe, but I think a chocolate protein powder would be EXCELLENT, so that’s what I suggest you use if you have some on hand.

Oats: Oats add fiber to smoothies, they’re neutral tasting and basically just make them more filling and nutritious, which is why I love them. Make sure to blend the smoothie completely in your blender (at least 30 seconds!) so that the oats are fully blended.

Milk: I used to always suggest using almond milk, but the truth is, ANY milk works in this recipe! You know I prefer dairy-free milks, so just use whatever is in your refrigerator.

INGREDIENT ADD-INS

Want to add even more nutrition to this smoothie? Go for it! Here are a few simple suggestions:

  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Shredded coconut
  • Spinach, or any greens
  • Strawberries – these will change the flavor of the smoothie, but strawberries do pair well with chocolate, peanut butter and banana

Author: Erin

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder*
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice or more

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to your blender then pulse for at least 30 seconds or until smooth. Enjoy!

Notes

*Or any kind of protein powder! I typically have some sort of vanilla-flavored powder on hand, but chocolate protein powder makes this smoothie even more chocolate-y.
**Use frozen bananas if you want your smoothie to be extra thick.
***This smoothie is very filling, so though it serves 1, I've had times where I drink half then save the other half for later (or share some with my husband :))

I can’t do this humidty. It’s insane. Even MY HAIR is a lion’s mane because of it. Also it makes it hard to run/live/do anything.

I’m not much of one for smoothies after workouts. This does look amazing though!

I live in Queensland Australia. The summers here are so hot and humid, I hate it! Thankfully it’s winter here now, although winter is nothing like what I’m used to growing up in South Dakota.

Chocolate and peanut butter is theeeee best combination!

Oddly enough, I sometimes find smoothies after exercising nauseating. I don’t know if it’s just my brain or whether I just need something solid.

WOW! I just had a post workout smoothie but this post is already making me crave another one! And yes, the heat is definitely influencing my tastebuds – my latest obsession for breakfast is cold, overnight quinoa flakes, but your smoothie may jump in line too!

Oohhh, yyyuuuuumm. I love the chocolate drizzle on the glass, looks like a peanut butter mudslide.

Yes, Florida heat sucks. I spent the first 25 years of my life in it! But that’s why there are plenty of beaches and ice cold springs. You hang out all day and swim and then go home and clean up while the afternoon rain showers start to roll in. Sigh…you’re making me feel nostalgic. However, I agree, it is horrible for the hairdo!!

Haha okay so for some reason I pictured you like stroking your chin like an evil villain saying “mmm yessss.. yessss muahahahaha.” And dayuuuummm that lil cup design is super cool!

I ALWAYS experience the freaking humidity because I have RED VELVET INTERIOR (<<<< THE WORST!) in my car and also no AC. Fun.

oh babbbby check out that pour shot. I think it’s hot and humid outside but it’s been raining which means I won’t go outside to check. Come to think of it I don’t think I’ve been outside for 3 days. How am I still alive? Come hang out with meeee.

This is my absolute favorite smoothie combo! I could eat it every day.

I live in Southeastern VA, so today’s heat index will be 105. I basically live in a ponytail most days. I swore to myself that every time I want to complain about the heat this year, I’ll just remember the polar vortex of 2014 haha. Then the heat feels great!

Chocolate and peanut butter will forever be my favourite smoothie flavour. You just can’t go wrong! It’s been super humid here the last few days, but the rain today seems to have broken it…for now, anyways.

Amy is right, the heat lasts forever down here, but I do much better with this than really cold weather! I am a beach/lake baby through and through, so if a have a large body of water within driving distance I’m good!

To answer your question, yes, this happens to southerners, except it happens for at least 6 months of the year. And it’s awful. And it’s why I can only be in Louisiana for a few months before realizing that I just can’t cut it anymore. I gave up on even trying to make my hair cute here.

YES! The humidity has been out of control these days. The air is so thick sometimes it’s hard to breath! Ugh!

As far as this smoothie, I’m drooling over here! I need to buy more chocolate protein powder, then I’m totally making this. It looks amazing!
