Ingredient notes:

  • Oats - That’s it! Oat flour can be made from old fashioned rolled oats, quick oats, and steel cut oats. Use only one kind or a variety! This is meant to be a budget-friendly flour, after all, so use what’s on sale or go with your favorite. Note: Not all oats are gluten free. Make sure the brand you buy is certified gluten free if you plan on using your oat flour in gluten free recipes.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Blend the oats. Place the oats in a blender and blend until they turn into a fine powder. 

Step 2: Use or store for later. Use the flour right away or transfer it into jars or containers for later.

Expert tips and FAQs

  • This recipe makes 2 ⅔ cups of oat flour (1 cup of oats = a little over 1 cup of oat flour).
  • No blender at home? Pulse the oats in a food processor instead.
  • I like to store my flour in sealed jars but any container with a lid or ziplock bags will work too.
  • Steel cut oats are hearty and dense, meaning they’ll need to be blended a little longer than other varieties. They’ll also produce twice as much flour as quick oats or rolled oats.

Can you substitute oat flour for all purpose flour?

It depends on the recipe. Use these tips before you try substituting oat flour for all purpose flour:

  1. Don’t replace all of it: You shouldn’t replace all of the all purpose or whole wheat flour with oat flour because it’s so light. Usually, 25% to 30% of all purpose flour in a recipe can be substituted for oat flour. Or, you can increase the amount of total flour used (if a recipe calls for 1 cup of all purpose flour, try using 1 ⅓ cup oat flour).
  2. When it’s made with eggs: If it’s a baked goods recipe that contains eggs (like pancakes or chocolate chip cookies), try replacing the full amount with oat flour. Eggs help bind all of the ingredients together and provide structure without needing gluten. 
  3. No-bake recipes: You can almost always use oat flour in no-bake recipes, such as these paleo granola bars. 

When in doubt, only use oat flour when the recipe calls for it!

What’s the difference between oat flour and all purpose flour?

Oat flour can give recipes and baked goods more flavor and a chewy texture, but all purpose flour has more substance. All purpose flour is the best choice when making crusty bread, cake, or any other recipe that benefits from a rise.

Is oat flour healthy?

Yes, oat flour is very healthy. It’s a great source of fiber, protein, and healthy fats, and can help lower your cholesterol and support gut health. 

Is oat flour gluten free?

Oat flour is only 100% gluten free when it’s made with certified gluten free oats.

Storage

Room temperature: Once it’s ready, store the oat flour in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Keep it next to your other flours in a cool, dry place.
