Wow, I feel like I was just writing my initial post on this subject, and here I am writing about my final one. My time with the local Pittsburgh 412 Food Rescue organization is coming to an end, and I wanted to recap my experience, the organization, and encourage YOU to volunteer, because we’re adults now and we do have time. <—yeah, I just went there.Â
As a quick recap, 412 Food Rescue aims to reduce food waste by collecting unused food from businesses and individuals and delivering it to people and places that need it most, like nursing homes and food pantries. The food is in perfectly good condition, it’s simply that the businesses have a surplus of it, and rather than it going unused and to waste, it gets delivered elsewhere where it can be served and enjoyed.
I've partnered with 412 Food Rescue a few times throughout the year--once on an actual food rescue, another at a volunteer appreciation night, and another at a charity dinner--and every experience has been nothing short of amazing. Right now—specifically the month of December—tends to be the busiest month of the year for ALL of us, and volunteering can seem like a huge commitment, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, there are a couple different (and easy!) things you can do this holiday season that align with 412 Food Rescue’s mission.Â
First, you can donate! Easy. Simply make a monetary donation (or ask friends and family to make a donation) to 412 Food Rescue.Â
Second, if you can find the time in your schedule to take it a step further, become a #FoodRescueHero and participate in an actual food rescue, like I did here. Guys, it’s a really cool, feel-good experience and one that I’m hoping Miguel and I can do together soon. You’ll physically see the food go from one place to another, and you can tell people are just so grateful. All you have to do is download the app by clicking this link--it's that easy!Â
Whether you’re local to Pittsburgh or not, you can still take steps to be mindful of your food waste during the holidays. FOOD BLOGGERS LISTEN UP! It’s easy to over-buy, over-bake and let food go to waste, but let’s try to be extra mindful when shopping by making a list and sticking to it, only buying food you know you will eat and making sure to freeze food to use for leftovers.Â
Obviously this is geared towards Pittsburgh locals, but even if you’re not in or around the Pittsburgh area, do a quick Google search and see if you can find a similar organization that you can get involved with. Let's all work together to #endfoodwaste !!!Â
Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by 412 Food Rescue. A huge thank you to them for all that they do, and for allowing me to work with them throughout this year!
