Blueberries and chocolate are finally getting together! The magical pair transforms into an ice-cold dream in this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie recipe. It’s a combo you never knew you needed in your life!

Just like my Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie, this easy vegan smoothie isn’t made with frozen banana, yet still has a thick and creamy texture. Every sip features a short list of healthy and vegan-friendly ingredients, like frozen wild blueberries, dairy free milk and yogurt, cocoa powder, and maple syrup. It’s that hint of chocolate that makes every sip irresistible!

Enjoy it for a healthy breakfast or a refreshing snack. Once you try blueberries and chocolate together, you’ll never go back!

Why you’ll love this smoothie

  • It’s everything you want in a smoothie: easy ingredients, fruity flavors, and a hint of chocolate.
  • It’s super creamy, even without banana!
  • Chocolate makes everything better.
ingredients to make a smoothie like frozen blueberries and cocoa powder

Ingredient notes:

  • Almond milk – Use dairy free milk to keep the smoothie vegan or swap it for regular milk.
  • Blueberries – The #1 rule for making slushy, ice-cold smoothies is to use frozen fruit. If you can, use frozen wild blueberries because their flavor is stronger and punchier compared to regular blueberries.
  • Chia seeds – These tiny seeds are a nutritional powerhouse, as they’re packed full of antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, and fiber. Bonus: they won’t affect the flavor or texture of your smoothie.
  • Cocoa powder – A little goes a long way! For a minimally processed option, use cacao powder instead.
  • Maple syrup – For natural sweetness and balance. Pitted dates work well too!

Tips and FAQs

  • No need for frozen banana! This smoothie is slushy and creamy thanks to the frozen berries, yogurt, and milk.
  • If it isn’t thick enough, add a handful of ice and blend.
  • No blueberries at home? Make the smoothie with frozen strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, or a mix of all four instead.
  • Top the blended smoothie with cacao nibs, fresh blueberries, or chocolate granola.

What else goes well in a blueberry smoothie?

A scoop of protein powder, espresso powder, ground flaxseed, vanilla extract, more frozen berries, and frozen bananas.

Can you make it ahead of time?

Smoothies always taste best when they’re freshly blended, but you can make it the night ahead if you’d like to save time. Blend up the banana smoothie, store it in an airtight container in the fridge, and enjoy the next day.

Mhmm this looks delicious! I’ve been on a big blueberry kick lately and have a huge bag in my fridge. I’ll have to give these a go!

Along with that, your photography is getting better and better by the day! Great job!

    1. TheAlmondEater says:

Thanks girl 🙂 I’m tryinggggg haha just gotta keep practicing!

  2. Camille @ Challenge Mantra says:

Sounds tasty! I love buying blueberries in bulk and freezing them for smoothies, but I just ran out 🙁

  3. Davida @ The Healthy Maven says:

So I switched up my blueberry superfood smoothie with chocolate protein powder and it was bombbbbb. P.s. I like the straws. I picked up sick straws this weekend from a place in Toronto and I think I am overly excited about them lol

    1. TheAlmondEater says:

Thanks girl I needed something more exciting than the boring ones I was using–excited to see your straws. ……sounds so weird.

  4. Chelsea @ A Fit LittleOne says:

This is how I make my protein smoothies!! Well minus the maple syrup and chia seeds, but still close enough haha. Chocolate and blueberries are just winners!

  5. Ursula @ Northern Ambitions says:

You didn’t try a blueberry until you were a teenager? I hope you’re making up for lost time by eating copious amounts now! I love berries, and I especially love warmed up blueberries because they get all juicy. Yum

    1. TheAlmondEater says:

Hahhh I know, weird right? I’m about to be eating looooots of blueberries now that they’re about to be in season!

  6. Agata says:

The smoothie sounds delish. I’ve been obsessed with avocados these past few months so I’d probably add half of one to mine.

I think I’ve always loved blueberries, especially when they’re frozen!

    1. TheAlmondEater says:

Ahh great idea I didn’t think of that!

  7. Kim @ BusyBod says:

I tried a blueberry when I was young, spit it out, and refused to try them again until adulthood, because well, drama queen. Now I’m weird about blueberries because I still don’t particularly like them on their own, but I love them in things like muffins and pancakes and smoothies!

  8. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says:

I couldn’t tell you the first time I tried blueberries…but knowing my tastes as a child, it was probably in a pie 😉

    1. TheAlmondEater says:

Hahah that’s funny because I don’t think I’ve ever had blueberry pie…. *gasp*

  9. Tina Muir says:

Love the word veganized….I think it works! This smoothie looks great Erin! Yum yum!

  10. Amanda @ .running with spoons. says:

I looooove blueberries, but I have no idea when I first tried them… I loved them as a child, buuuuut the only way I would eat them was if they were sprinkled with sugar 😆
