This Vegan Superfood Chocolate Smoothie combines four superfoods—chia seeds, hemp seeds, camu camu powder, and cacao—into one delicious and nutrient-packed drink!
If you aren’t already aware, I’ve been on a huge smoothie kick lately. Ya see, eggs are my go-to breakfast. So, some mornings I will wake up, eat a banana, go to the gym and then come home and eat a huge egg-filled post workout breakfast. Other times, however, I won’t go to the gym in the morning but will continue to eat eggs for breakfast. Rather than eating eggs twice in one day (once for breakfast and once after I workout), I prefer to drink a protein smoothie post workout.
Now, I’m not going to say that I don’t like protein powder, because I do, but I truly prefer to get my protein in naturally if and when possible. That’s where superfoods come in! Superfoods are great for 3500 different reasons, but I’m going to try to sum up the reasons why you should incorporate superfoods into your diet.
According to David Wolfe, author and Superfoods expert, super foods are “a class of the most potent, super concentrated and nutrient-rich foods on the planet. Superfoods have the ability to tremendously increase the vital force and energy of one’s body, and are the optimum choice for improving overall health.”
The cool thing is that superfoods can basically be “hidden” in any recipe and you’d hardly even know! Like hemp seeds, for example. They have a mild nutty flavor, but for the most part, you can just add a teaspoon here and a teaspoon there in various recipes to get an added boost of nutrients. Now, let’s break down this smoothie, shall we? This smoothie contains chia seeds, hemp seeds, camu camu powder, and cacao powder. Now for the benefits…
Chia seeds are high in both fiber and protein, making these a great way to help you stay fuller longer.
Hemp seeds are rich in iron, Vitamin E and amino acids, and there’s also a hefty 10g of protein per serving.
Camu camu powder comes from the camu berry, which is the highest source of Vitamin C on the planet. Plus, it also enhances immunity and increases energy.
Cacao is the highest antioxidant food on the planet. It helps to improve cardiovascular health and build strong bones. Clearly I was looking to strengthen my bones with the amount of cacao I decided to throw on top… (secret: I was actually trying to get a pour shot and it failed).
Now that we’ve got our superfood lesson of the day, let’s talk about where you can actually purchase these superfoods! Most natural food markets, including Whole Foods, should sell superfoods. See…simple as that! There are obviously many other superfoods out there, but the ones I’ve used in this recipe are a few of my personal favorites.
I love superfoods for all the reasons listed above, but I especially love them in a smoothie. You’re already adding a bunch of random stuff anyway, might as well throw in some superfoods to up the nutritional value right? Right.
If you weren’t looking for a superfoods lesson today and just wanted the recipe, here ya go! Enjoy friends!
