These crunchy, flavor-packed homemade whole wheat croutons are made with whole wheat bread, olive oil, Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese and are completely foolproof!
What’s the best part of every salad? It’s not the lettuce, it’s not the tomatoes or the cheese or even the salad dressing. Ok, ok some would argue it’s the dressing, but for the sake of this post, let’s all agree it’s the CROUTONS. The crunchy, garlicky, cheesy, whole wheat croutons.
As you might imagine, making homemade croutons is super easy and therefore there’s zero excuse to ever be “out” of croutons. It’s just dried bread! These croutons are extra delicious if and when they’re made with Dave’s Killer Bread. Have you seen this stuff popping up in stores around you yet? I have! When I started my partnership with DKB back in April, it wasn’t sold in any stores near Pittsburgh. BUT, I was in Target the other day and saw it and had a mini freak out. The good kind of freak out of course! So happy and excited for more people to be able to try this stuff.
Ok so, croutons. Have you made your own before? You’ll start by cutting the bread into bite-size pieces, then you’ll drizzle the bread with olive oil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper before putting the soon-to-be croutons in the oven to bake. The bake time will vary depending on your oven, but mine ended up taking approximately 30 minutes total. Not too shabby considering the prep time is only 5 minutes!
The best part about these whole wheat croutons is that they’re made with the Power Seed variety of bread, meaning they’re actually pretty healthy. This bread is sweetened only with organic fruit juices (only 1g per slice!) and is packed with fiber, protein and whole grains. Perfect for adults and kids (back to school lunches, anyone?). Croutons make every salad better, and, in my opinion, are the best part!
Though I did eat these atop a salad after I made them, I ate the majority of them by themselves like potato chips. Just straight from the bowl… Please tell me you’ve done that before?! I couldn’t resist the flavor or the crunch, and they’re pretty guilt-free if you ask me.

Homemade Whole Wheat Croutons
- 6 slices Dave’s Killer Bread Power Seed variety
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 3 tsp Italian seasoning
- 3 tbsp shredded parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper
- Preheat oven to 325°.
- Cut bread into bite-size squares and then place in a large bowl.
- Drizzle the bread with olive oil, Italian seasoning, cheese, salt, and pepper; stir to coat.
- Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick spray or olive oil and then pour bread slices onto pan, making sure they’re spread out and not touching.
- Place the pan in the oven and bake croutons for approximately 30 minutes, flipping croutons over half way through so that they bake evenly.
- Remove from oven and enjoy!
*Cook times may vary. You’ll know the croutons are done once they’re hard–do a taste test to make sure!
