This vegan Chocolate Cake is topped with a simple Tequila Orange Icing and tequila-soaked sugar coated oranges. It’s a perfect party cake, and the tequila adds a subtle zing to the icing that’s sure to please!

CAKE and tequila. AND TEQUILA. It’s happening.
When you think of tequila, what do you think of? Margaritas? Tequila shots, perhaps? Or, more specifically, too many tequila shots in college? No? Just me? Awkward.
I think the general public tends to think tequila and cocktails go hand in hand, which they do, but there are many other uses for tequila. Like cake, for example. For this recipe, I made a regular ‘ole chocolate cake (vegan though!) with a zesty tequila orange icing topped with tequila-soaked and sugar coated oranges! It’s gooooooood.
For the tequila, I opted to use Altos Plata Tequila, which is 100% Agave where the agave is planted in mineral-rich volcanic soil. The goal of Altos Tequila is to provide a high-quality tequila that uses an authentic agave distillation process but that’s also accessible to tequila drinkers everywhere.
Now, I’m not going to pretend to know everything about tequila, but I can tell you one thing: this is NOT the horrible tequila you’d drink in college. Quite the opposite actually, and it goes nicely in this recipe. It has the zing of tequila yet it’s subtle enough in the tequila orange icing.
As for the cake, it’s super moist and is sure to please all chocolate lovers, though the icing is the real star of the show. Oh, and the tequila-soaked oranges. Or should I say “oranges” because technically I used a combination of mandarins and tangerines.
Tip: If you’re going to include the oranges in the middle layer, I recommend using a smaller size orange, like mandarins, tangerines or clementines, rather than regular naval oranges.

Chocolate Cake with Tequila Orange Icing
- Prep Time: 35 mins
- Cook Time: 30 mins
- Total Time: 1 hour 5 mins
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup cane sugar OR granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
- 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- For the icing:
- 2 tbsp butter (use dairy free for vegan option), softened
- 6 tbsp orange juice
- 1 tsp Altos Plata Tequila
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar*
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Melt coconut oil in the microwave or over stovetop and then set it aside, allowing time for it to cool.
- Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl; set aside.
- In a separate bowl, combine milk, applesauce, syrup, vinegar, and vanilla; stir with an electric mixer. Then, add in the coconut oil.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients with an electric mixer.
- Grease two 8″ cake pans with coconut oil and then distribute the cake batter evenly amongst the pans. Bake cakes for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Leave cakes in the pans for 10 minutes and then run a knife around the edges and carefully invert the cakes onto a cooling rack. Allow cakes to cool completely before icing them.
- While the cakes are cooling, prepare the icing by combining butter, orange juice and tequila in a bowl with an electric mixer. Next, add the powdered sugar and mix until icing is smooth.
- To assemble the cake: use a serrated knife to cut off the “dome” part of both cakes. Generously ice the one cake and then add the tequila oranges. To do so, combine 1/4 cup water and 1 tbsp Altos Plata Tequila in a bowl; add oranges (preferably mandarins, tangerines and clementines–use however many you want to include) and soak them in the tequila. Also, feel free to dip them in a bowl of sugar too (so good!). Once the oranges are placed on top of one cake, stack the second cake on top and repeat the same process.
- Once cake is assembled, cut and enjoy!
*Or possibly a bit more if you want the icing thicker
