These Caramelized Onion Turkey Burgers have caramelized onions inside the burgers and are topped with a simple apple slaw.
It’s about time I share a turkey burger recipe, specifically a caramelized onion turkey burger recipe. Because it’s Monday, and because why not?
I made these burgers last week and showed the caramelized onions on Instagram story, to which Miguel replied “are those what’s for dinner?!” ….to which I replied with an eye roll emoji and kindly told him that I made a few burgers sans onions just for him. I think he hates onions as much as I hate pickles which is a LOT, but I really don’t understand it. Every time I go out to eat, my eyes and my stomach are drawn to menu items with caramelized onion in the title. Like, pleeeease give me that burger with swiss, mushrooms and caramelized onions, you know? Yeah, you know.
Oh, and considering my caramelized onion spaghetti squash and quinoa are two very popular recipes here, I can say with confidence that Miguel is in the minority in regards to not liking onions. Weirdo.
Last week after teaching one of my barre classes, one of my clients and blog readers asked told me she was in need of a good burger recipe. Oddly enough, I had already created these burgers, so Stacey, these are unintentionally just for you. The best part about these turkey burgers is that they have caramelized onions IN them, not on top of them like every other recipe. CARAMELIZED ONIONS INSIDE OF THE BURGERS. Sorry for shouting buuuuut they’re really freaking good.
Oh, and let’s not forget about the apple slaw. …just now noticing that this recipe screams fall. ….speaking of which, it was in the 60s both Saturday and Sunday morning and I sort of loved it. If it was possible for there to be fall weather year round but with summer produce, now that’d be amazing.
Sorry getting super side-tracked—back to the burgers and slaw.
For this recipe, you’ll start by making the onions, and while they’re caramelizing, you can place the ground turkey into a large bowl and then begin prepping the apple slaw. The apple slaw is simply apples, cabbage and fennel, but it pairs perfectly with the onions.
PS these burgers are 100% Whole30-friendly if you omit the buns! HOWEVER, if you’re not doing whole30 I recommend spreading a little paleo mayo mixed with a drop of maple syrup on the burger buns. Sounds weird, but it works!Print
Caramelized Onion Turkey Burgers
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Cook Time: 20 mins
- Total Time: 35 mins
- 2 lb ground turkey
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp ghee or butter*
- 1 apple (green or red)
- 1/2 cup fennel
- 1/2 cup purple cabbage
- Salt and pepper
- Burger buns**
- Optional spread:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1-2 tsp maple syrup
- Begin by caramelizing the onions: heat oil and butter/ghee in a large skillet over medium heat. While they’re heating up, slice the onion into rings and then cut the rings in half so that you have longish strips of onions.
- Place the onion in the skillet and turn the heat down to medium-low. Stir the onions occasionally until they’re soft and translucent. If the onions start to burn, turn the heat down and add a bit more oil.
- While the onions are cooking, place the ground turkey in a large bowl and set aside.
- Next, make the apple slaw: start by slicing the apple into small strips and placing them in a bowl. Add the fennel and purple cabbage to the bowl, sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside.
- At this point, the onion should be caramelized. Pour the entire content of the skillet–the onion and any leftover oil/butter–into the bowl with the turkey and stir to combine. Add salt and pepper here as well.
- Place the skillet back on the stovetop–no need to rinse it out–and use it for the burgers. Once the onion is mixed in well with the turkey, use your hands to form the burgers and then place them in the skillet.
- Cook burgers on medium-high heat, placing a lid on the skillet, until meat is cooked through and burgers are golden brown on both sides.
- Once burgers are cooked, either serve them with the buns or omit for paleo version, and top them with the apple slaw.
- If you’re using the buns, spread them with the mayo mixture.
*Or simply use 1/4 cup oil and omit butter altogether **Omit buns to keep these paleo and gluten free
