Ohhhhh the great Whole30 smoothie debate! I’ll admit I didn’t read into the specific rules, but apparently you’re supposed to drink smoothies sparsely, as well as consuming cacao, which is why ultimately I’m calling this smoothie paleo and vegan rather than Whole30. I debated it for awhile, but I didn’t want the Whole30 police coming after me for posting a cacao smoothie with VEGGIES IN IT, so let’s just call it paleo, k? K. Glad we’re on the same page.
Note: if you prefer, you can omit the cacao and this will still taste delicious as either a strawberry-based or cashew butter-based smoothie. YUM.
Phew, I just had to get that out of the way…
I’ll admit that so far, Whole30 hasn’t actually been that bad or that difficult… the thing I miss the most is probably the piece of toast I typically eat with my eggs in the morning. Other than that, I’m not really craving anything super sweet. If and when I do, I tend to make a smoothie—yeah sorry not sorry)—or I eat a handful of dates and that usually does the trick. I’ve also found that, not surprisingly, I’m eating a lot more veggies, specifically zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower. I love ‘em.
Anyway, that’s how life’s going for me, and as you might have seen on Instagram yesterday, I really wanted to get this post up yesterday but spent the weekend working on freelance work, and so this post had to get pushed back a day. But now it’s here—the delicious cacao smoothie you were waiting for.
So what’s in it anyway? It’s packed with tons of good-for-you foods that will keep you full for awhile and make you feel super healthy. I mean heck, any time I throw veggies into a smoothie I basically think I’m the healthiest person alive. Have you tried zucchini in your smoothies yet? It’s quite the trend these days, and seeing as I’m always trying to keep up with food trends (not sarcasm–I really always am) I figured why not make a recipe?! So, we’ve got banana, zucchini, cauliflower, dates, cacao, almonds or cashews, and almond milk, with a handful of optional add ins, like strawberries and cashew butter. SO.DAMN.GOOD.

- ¼ cup cauliflower or cauliflower rice
- ½ zucchini
- ½ banana
- ¼ cup raw almonds or cashews
- 5 pitted dates
- 2 tbsp cacao
- ¾ cup almond milk
- Optional add-ins:
- ½ cup strawberries
- 2 tbsp almond or cashew butter
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp hemp seeds
- Place ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy!
