Did you always want to be a food blogger?
Not quite. I started reading healthy living blogs way back in the day and decided to start my own in 2013 because I was in desperate need of a hobby. Fast forward to 2015 when I lost my job and took on blogging full time, along with two freelance food photography jobs. It wasn’t until October 2015 that I declared The Almond Eater a strict food blog. Before that, TAE was a food AND fitness blog, but I realized my passion was the entire food blogging process; from brainstorming recipes, to recipe testing and development, to food photography, editing, and writing about food, the process excited me much more than writing about fitness. Now, TAE is a place people can come to for quick, simple, healthy, 30 minute meals, and I’m thankful every single day that I get to do what I love for a living and for readers like YOU who make it possible. I couldn’t do it without you!
Though food blogging is my main gig, I also teach barre classes at The Barre Code Pittsburgh. Stop by and take a class if you’re ever in the area!
What kind of diet do you follow?
I follow the ‘no diet’ diet and it’s pretty awesome. Some days I eat meat, some days I don’t; some days I eat dairy; some days I don’t. I live my life label-free and, though this doesn’t work for everyone, it works for me. The only constant in my diet is real, mostly healthy food. And coffee. Always coffee.
How many calories are in this recipe?
I’m sorry but I’m not sure. I try to focus on whole foods and real ingredients rather than calories both in my personal diet and on this blog. Some day I may add a calorie count to my recipes, but for now I’m just keeping it real with the ingredients I use.
What’s your favorite food?
SUCH a tough question and you probably think it’s almonds but… it’s not. I love them, but I love chocolate covered pretzels, cooked kale, cheese, avocado, iced coffee, and pizza more.
Why are you so obsessed with iced coffee?
This isn’t a real question, but I’ll gladly answer it. The short answer is that I’m a pretty slow eater/drinker and I hate drinking hot coffee once it isn’t hot anymore. With iced coffee, you never have that problem. Plus, I kinda just like drinking out of straws, which is also why I’m such a smoothie fan!
What kind of camera do you use?
All of my photos are shot with a [discontinued] Canon Rebel T3i and a 50 mm lens. If you want to learn more about food photography and how to take gorgeous photos on a budget, check out my ebook.
Do you take all of your own photos?
Yes, I take all of my photos unless stated otherwise. Over the past two years I’ve taught myself food photography and I’m still learning every day. You can see in this early post that I clearly had no idea what I was doing. But, practice equals improvement and food photography has since become a huge part of my career and one my favorite things to do.
Do you ever work with brands or companies?
Yes! Developing recipes for brands I believe in is part of what I do. You can find out more collaboration information on my contact page.
Where do you live?
I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA with my fiancé Miguel, aka my #1 taste tester and best friend. I have a deep love for Pittsburgh, despite the fact that it isn’t the sunniest place on earth.
What kind of dog is Layla?
A mutt! ….not the answer you were looking for? The truth is, Miguel and I aren’t really sure, but our best guesses include catahoula/great dane/lab/hound mix of some sort. Whatever she is, she’s a giant ball of lovable (and sometimes annoying…) energy 24/7.
