This Blood Orange Hot Chocolate is a fun and unique way to enjoy your next cup of hot chocolate. It only requires six ingredients and is ready in just 10 minutes!
Holy smokes, it’s Friday! Typically I post desserts or alcoholic beverages on Fridays, but I figure this hot chocolate is an ok third option. This hot chocolate isn’t just any hot chocolate though—it’s blood orange hot chocolate because I’m obsessed! ..though I can’t decide what I like more: the look of blood oranges or the taste (ok obviously it’s the beautiful color of them).
You may have seen on Instagram, but I spent some time yesterday roasting carrots while simultaneously testing various cake recipes. For the first time maybe…ever?… I was trying to make a gluten free cake. The first one was WAY too moist, so I cut back on the second try and the cake was MUCH better, but still sliiiiiightly too moist. I know moist cake is good, but these were too moist to even cut SO, I shall try again another time. Between you and me, I was pooped after those two tries, so I just went ahead and make a regular ole cake for the third “try” so I didn’t feel like such a failure.
Then I proceeded to eat cake and carrots for a mid-day snack/late lunch/early dinner. YUMMMM, and as many of you said, balance!
So… hot chocolate. I used to hate it and now I don’t. Hooray! To me, hot chocolate is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up if you’re craving something but don’t want another cup of coffee. This chocolate requires just six ingredients—dark chocolate, almond milk, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, and blood oranges—that’s it! You melt the chocolate and milk together, add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil before simmering for a few minutes.
Oh how I adore recipes that take less than 10 minutes.
Then, if you’re so inclined, you can (ok, totally should) add some whipped cream, chopped chocolate and maybe even a blood orange wedge on top. You know, just for fun. What is hot chocolate without whipped cream anyway? If you’re looking for a new and different way to enjoy hot chocolate, this blood orange version is the way to go!
- ½ cup dark chocolate, chopped (I used 70%)
- 2 cups almond milk
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp cane sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp blood orange juice
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- Melt dark chocolate and almond milk together in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring frequently to avoid burning it.
- Once melted, reduce to low heat and add remaining ingredients.
- Simmer ingredients on low for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and enjoy!
